Alex is based in London in the construction and engineering team. Alex's particular focus is engineering contracts in the energy, chemicals and transport sectors in the UK and internationally.
 
Specialist experience includes:
  • Renewable and traditional power generation – onshore wind, offshore wind, solar PV and thermal, CCGTs, coal-fired Plant, nuclear plant and energy from waste schemes.
  • Upstream and downstream oil and gas and chemicals projects: refineries, rigs, jackets and subsea installation, processing plant – new build and conversion.
 
He has in-depth knowledge of EPC and EPCM, FEED, design and build, and services contracts, including the following standard forms: FIDIC, LOGIC, NEC3, IChemE, MF1 and the ICC forms. His work often involves project finance. Alex also advises on contracts for the long term provision of engineering, and operation and maintenance contracts.
 
Alex also has extensive experience advising on PPP and commercial development transactions.

  • Chemicals – advising a major international chemicals producer on a large cracker conversion project
  • Gas fired power – advising Yeni Elektrik Uretim on the EPC, LTSA and O&M agreements and contract management support for a large CCGT plant in Turkey
  • Real Estate – advising a multinational oil & gas services company on a FIDIC contract for the construction of a large O&G servicing facility in Kazakhstan
  • Offshore wind – advising Ofgem, RWE Npower Renewables, EdF, Renewable Energy Systems, Statoil and other stakeholders in UK offshore wind projects

  • Offshore oil and gas – advising a joint venture between Gazprom, Total and Statoil on EPIC contracts for the sub-sea infrastructure for phase 1 of the development of the Shtokman gas field in the Barents Sea

  • a major European national energy company on various construction documents as part of a mandate as international construction counsel, including the development of a gas field off-shore Brazil

  • the lenders on a 30MW solar thermal IPP project in Spain.  The project involved a new type of solar collection technology

  • developers of the Sheringham Shoal wind farm, off-shore UK on the wind turbine supply agreement and other construction contracts for this large wind farm

  • adult education – Alex was the principal adviser to an adult education college in central London on the building contract and consultant appointments in respect of a £20m new build facility
  • international hotels – advised an international hotel owner and operator on the development of two hotels on the same site under different brands in Berkshire
  • further education – advised a further education college on several construction contracts in respect of the redevelopment of their facilities
  • UK hotels – advised a UK hotel owner/operator on the extension of a hotel
  • care home – advised a charity on the JCT contract and consultant appointments in relation to the refurbishment of a residential care home

Alex has advised Royal Bank of Scotland, Bank of Scotland, HSBC Private Bank, Clydesdale Bank, Deutsche Bank and Bank of Ireland on the construction aspects of their funding of a variety of developments, including:
  • advising on an £80m student accommodation scheme in Yorkshire
  • advising on a £30 mixed residential and retail scheme in the Midlands
  • advising on a £25m student accommodation scheme in the Midlands
  • advising on a £20m office block refurbishment procured using construction management
  • the work involves drafting and negotiating, warranties, bonds and guarantees and reviewing JCT construction contracts and consultant appointments
 
Accommodation PFI
  • NHS LIFT – advised the funder on the construction elements of a two centre NHS LIFT scheme
  • PFI & insolvency – advised the project companies on the restructuring of three schools PFI schemes.  More recently Alex has advised on the termination of a schools PFI contract
  • schools PFI – drafted and negotiated (as principal) a building contract for a two school PFI projects in London
  • PFI dispute – advised an NHS hospitals trust on a specification dispute and a delay and disruption dispute in relation to the PFI project for an acute hospital, including advising at mediation
  • further experience – drafted the warranties, consultant appointments and other ancillary documentation on several schools and health PFI schemes
